Obturation in dentistry
The term obturation is used in dentistry to define what is commonly known as "filling", which consists of cleaning out the cavity resulting from decay and then filling it with a material. This process restores the dental anatomy for proper aesthetics, function, chewing and occlusion of the teeth with their antagonists, and achieves a good seal that prevents the carious lesion from recurring.
Types of fillings in endodontics
The most common filling materials are composite resins, amalgam, cohesive gold (now obsolete), glass ionomers, compomers and dental cements such as calcium hydroxide, zinc oxyphosphate and eugenol. What is normally known as a "filling" nowadays is usually made with composite resins or, previously, with silver amalgam. The latter has fallen out of use mainly due to its lack of aesthetics and its supposed toxicity, which is not recognised by the ADA (American Dental Association) or by virtually all dental communities worldwide; the remaining materials are for temporary fillings, used while a treatment—generally endodontic—is being completed or developed.
