Dental models and typodonts
Dental models or typodonts are anatomical reproductions of the dental structure similar to the mouth itself and serve as an educational tool in the dental practice for explaining dental procedures to patients and teaching oral hygiene techniques.
The more complex dental study typodonts are more precise reproductions used for study purposes and as a first approach for dental students carrying out pre-clinical university practicals and putting theoretical knowledge of anatomy, pathologies and treatments into physical practice without the need for a real patient.
Used for years, they are the best learning and practice tool, providing extra value beyond memorising notes or an anatomy atlas. Alongside the model, a phantom head is used — a mannequin imitating the patient in a clinical position on the dental chair.
The typodont is inserted into the phantom head's oral cavity with two screws, allowing it to mimic movements and tilt so that the student can practise proper posture, rotations and handling on the patient.
In this way, there are numerous model variations depending on each pathology, procedure to be practised and subject within the dentistry degree.
Traditionally, the best-known and most widely used brands are Frasaco, Nissin typodonts and models from the Kavo brand, which are of excellent quality but also come at a high price.
