Zinc oxyphosphate is the oldest cementing agent. It comes in powder-liquid form. As for the powder, it forms 90% zinc oxide in combination with other oxides such as magnesium, bismuth and silicon. While the liquid is composed of a combination of phosphoric acid, a similar proportion of water and few zinc salts.
Zinc oxyphosphate cement is particularly recommended for fixing external structures with tooth structure: orthodontic bands, inlays, crowns and fixed bridges. It is also used for temporary restorations as a base to protect the pulp from electrical, mechanical and chemical influences.
Among its benefits you will find that it is very easy to handle, has good physical properties and it is of low solubility.
In this category you can find: zinc phosphate cements, zinc oxyphosphate cements, zinc oxide cements and eugenol, among others.
Zinc oxide and eugenol cement is mainly used as a base for amalgam restorations or as a pulp-sedating agent. It is also often used as a temporary fixation cement.
