Digital: the big trends of IDS 2019

12/11/2019 - 11:19

In March the 2019 edition of the IDS (International Dental Show), was held, and if there is one thing that stands out above all is the preponderance of digital among dental innovations.

What are the main features of this digital revolution that seems to be exploited in the dental sector?

1. 3D Intraoral Scanner - Deep Dental X-Ray

Much has been said about digitization within the field of intraoral radiography. We have seen innovations in terms of intraoral scanning , such as the TRIOS 4 or the Primescan from Dentsply Sirona.

Trios 4 of 3Shape

These new types of intraoral 3D scanning allow for greater depth sharpness and, above all, very fast scanning. The dentist will appreciate being able to perform more precise and faster dental examinations .TRIOS 4 has the ability to detect superficial caries and interproximal caries thanks to its fluorescent technology to prevent the development of caries difficult to identify that could degenerate in the patient.

2. 3D visualization of dental restorations: more convincing patients

Another facet of dentistry that has come to digital is the visualization of dental restorations. Thanks to new 3D technologies, patients can now visualize the possible results of a restoration of their teeth. If 2D visualizations tend to convince patients to perform a dental restoration, imagine what 3D can do to increase the the acceptance rate of restoration treatments in your practice!

Bellus 3D facial scan

In this field, the Bellus 3D brand has presented its 3D facial scan that can scan your face and mouth and show the 3D result of a restoration. Ivoclar's IvoSmile application goes one step further by adding augmented reality with 3D technology. Where the Bellus 3D scan offers a simple scan and a 3D result, with the Ivoclar application, the patient can see the restoration result in real time on their screen.

However, these technologies, like any innovation, have compatibility disadvantages: Facial Scan 3D is available on iPhone X, but is only compatible with Android or computer with the help of the 3D Scan camera. The IvoSmile application is only compatible with iPhone and iPad.

3. Material de prótesis dental digital y nuevo

Finally, digital revolutionizes some practices that were still very traditional or limited to certain specialties. This is particularly the case with aligners that were previously reserved primarily for orthodontics. Brands now offer more and more aligner solutions for general dentistry.

Similarly, the evolution of digital revolutionizes dental printing for prosthetics, the last bastion of traditional techniques. Today, the creation of dental models in 3D and with new materials and techniques, make obsolete the previous techniques. For example, in terms of dental prostheses, the new version of Digital Denture from 3Shape ™ Dental System provides a simpler workflow for digital prosthesis creation. This is how prosthetists can now perform restorations digitally:
