Metal alloys are used in dentistry for the manufacture of prostheses, temporary and permanent crowns, orthodontic bands and in direct tooth restorations. The most commonly used are: gold, nickel, cobalt, chromium, tin, aluminium, titanium, iron, palladium, platinum, copper, silver, vanadium and mercury.

The main properties of metal alloys include: biocompatibility, appropriate grain size, adhesion properties, ease of casting and pouring, ease of welding and polishing, low shrinkage on solidification and minimal reactivity with the mould material, amongst others.
