First of all, it is important to know how which preventions you must have as a professional in the dental clinic, to take care and recommend your patients the different treatments providing them with security and thus, getting their loyalty.
How to differentiate high and low risk patients?
The current philosophy of caries prevention and control suggests that all patients should be given recommendations, not only those considered to be at high risk.
There are several methods to measure the risk of caries:
- Cariogram: computer program (downloadable and free) that evaluates several factors such as diet, individual susceptibility, bacterial biofilm or circumstance-habits. These factors are introduced in the program to know the risk of developing or preventing caries.

Colgate has a wide range of fluoride products, but it is worth mentioning the Duraphat, range. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of dental caries.
Clinical treatment for caries
Duraphat varnish has a high concentration of fluorine (22,600 ppm) composed of rosin, thanks to which the product adheres easily to the tooth surface, resulting in a slow release of fluoride safely and prolonged in time.
This product can be easily applied in the clinic by brush, probe or swab.
This product has been on the market for more than 50 years, it has several clinical studies that demonstrate its high efficacy and safety, and includes a review of the Cochrane.

Regarding the staining of the teeth, they have made a modification of the Duraphat Varnish formula, so that the application of the product is minimally visible, and you can perceive it much better before it disappears by brushing.
This product can be applied to patients of any age, and it is recommended to apply it twice a year to low risk patients and three times a year to high risk patients.
Home treatment for caries
For your patients to continue the treatment from home, recommend Duraphat 5000, a mint-flavoured toothpaste with a high concentration of fluoride (5000 ppm), which can replace the usual toothpaste and guarantees a reduction in caries of approximately 70%.
o obtain this product, no prescription is required and it is recommended by national guides and protocols, that recommend its use in patients at high risk of caries.
This product can be recommended to patients over 16 years old and for high risk patients from 6 years old onwards. In addition, you should recommend this product to patients who have the following conditions:
- Patients with braces and fissures.
- Patients with exposed dental necks.
- Patients with white spots.
- Patients with proximal lesions.
- Patients with implants, e.g. bridges, crowns, fillings.
- Other groups, such as patients with reduced salivary flow, low socio-economic status, risky eating habits or incorrect oral hygiene.
