At this time of year, from September to November, with the school years starting and summer ending, it is very common to start orthodontic treatments. Because of this, we want to talk about a highly utilized technique in orthodontics: the bite lift.
The lifting of the bite is a technique used to unblock the occlusion, prevent the upper teeth from colliding with the lower ones or achieve a greater transversal benefit of the arches. It is often used in lingual, vestibular and even orthodontic treatments with aligners.
The bite fixers can be used both in the anterior and posterior regions and the choice of the ideal place should be analyzed case by case by the orthodontist in the planning of the case.
Below, we will detail more about each type of bite lift.
Posterior Bite Lift
This lift is made on the occlusal side of the upper and / or lower molars and premolars. Its objective is to open the bite, causing the de-occlusion in the previous region. For a correct preparation, it is recommended to make bilateral lifts preferably in the second molars.
A very common way to perform posterior lifts, performed by many orthodontists, isusing mono-component photo-polymerizable resin with fluoride release. Within the most commonly used options, there is the Trasbond Plus from 3M or the Blue Resilience from Ortho Technology.
According to orthodontists consulted, the Resilience highlights its ideal consistency, easy handling and that it does not stick to the antagonist or wear easily, facilitating work and saving time.
In this next image, you can see the adhesive and its execution.
This type of lift is indicated, especially for dolicofacilae or mesiofacial patients, patients with anterior crossbite or lower third of the augmented face (prevention of extrusion of posterior teeth).
The photopolymerizable resin can remain in the mouth for approximately 8 months. In cases in which bite releases need to remain more than 8 months, it is recommended to perform the second molars in the alternative way, removing it after a few months.
Anterior Bite Lift
This type of lift is performed on the palatal surfaces of the upper central incisors, causing a posterior bite opening. This allows the extrusion of the molars and premolars, leveling the curve of the lower Spee. Consequently, it is possible to improve the overbite in cases of deep bite.
For this type of lift, you can use prefabricated bite lifts in composite, mini molds to fill with composite or make them directly on the tooth with composite for restorations. In the following image we observed an anterior bite lift with Bite-Builder from Ortho Technology:
This treatment is indicated especially for brachifacial or mesofacial patients, patients with deep bites or with porteriores crossbites.
Keep in mind:
- They must remain in the mouth until the installation of the steel arches.
- It is recommended to join the upper anterior teeth from canine to canine to prevent the opening of diastemas in this region.
- In patients with increased overjet, when the top of the anterior teeth becomes impossible, the preparation of the lift must be performed on the canines.
