Characteristics:

• Adhesive monomers react with dentin and enamel in an acid-base reaction.
• At the same time the polymerized reaction begins to form a three-dimensional network.
• As a result of the acid reaction of the first step, the water molecules react with the glass ionomer fillers of the cement.
• The consequences of this process are basic hydroxyl ions that cause the neutralized reaction until a pH of 7 is achieved.
• This chain changes the properties of the material from hydrophilic to hydrophobic.
• The result is a mechanical strength and dimensional stability that is typical in a resin composite.
