This system uses low-intensity current provided by electrodes, creating new intracellular pathways, acting directly on the skin transiently increasing the permeability of the layers. The lipid bilayer undergoes a temporary rearrangement leading to the formation of aqueous channels in the cell membrane. These forms of channelling connect (pro tempore) the skin surface with the underlying dermis, ensuring the passage of active substances, also of high molecular weight, which would otherwise be retained by the retention mechanisms of the epidermis. The cell membrane is therefore more permeable to a wide variety of hydrophilic molecules as the Ultraderm system intervenes by effectively reducing the TEER (Trans Epithelial Electrical Resistance) of the cornea layer, which favours the intracellular absorption of the active substance through the aqueous channels. In contrast to older competing systems, this system is able to transmit the active substances without the aid of conductive bases.
