Maillefer's guttacondensors are instruments made of stainless steel that, thanks to their rotation against the gutta-percha, plastifies it thanks to the heat that the friction itself causes.

In this plastic state, the gutta-percha is pushed apically and condenses.

To obtain sufficient heat to plasticize the gutta-percha, the guttacondensor must be used at a speed of 8000 min-1 with a high torque. On the other hand, for complete sealing of the duct system, the instrument must be placed at a distance of 2 mm from the apex of the already prepared channel. And, the graduations marked on the rod of the guttacondensor or the use of a silicone-stop can control the depth of its penetration.
