Maillefer's gutta condensors are stainless steel instruments that, with their rotation against the gutta-percha, plasticize thanks to the heat caused by the friction created.

In this plastic state, the gutta-percha is pushed apically and condenses.

To obtain sufficient heat to plasticize the gutta-percha, the gutta condensor must be used at a speed of 8000 min-1 with an elevated torque. Moreover, for complete sealing of the duct system, the instrument must be placed at a distance of 2 mm from the apex of the already prepared canal. The the graduations marked on the rod of the gutta condensor or the use of a silicone-stop can control the depth of its penetration.
