How to choose a dental bur: a video explanation.

06/05/2019 - 16:44

There are many different types of dental burs, being clasified per material, shape, and instrument to be used with, choosing the most appropiate bur to use might be confusing sometimes, and even though this is strictly related to the treatment the dentist is going to perform there are a couple of aspects to bear in mind before choosing a dental bur. It is important to remember that since the 80's, it was decided by the main international dental institutions to unify dental bur identification under a common nomenclature and a universal classification, so they are included in ADA specifications No. 23 and ISO standards.

Miriam from Medicaline visited us and shared with us some useful information on some characteristics to have in mind when choosing a dental bur among which we find grit size, diameter, and shape. Do not miss this video for the whole and detailed explanation.

What to have in mind when choosing a bur?

  • Use: meaning that the first step is to determine what kind of treatment are you going to perform with the bur.
  • Grit size: Medicaline clasifies its bur according to ISO color coding as follows: Fine ( Red) Blue ( standard) green( coarse).
  • Diameter: determines the diameter of the bur.
  • Reference: ISO number.

How do I identify which bur reference matches Medicaline's one?

You might be happy to know that when you have been using a bur you can easily identify it by recognizing its image in Medicaline's catalogue or by looking it up by its reference number.

Why do is there an extra letter on Medicaline's references?

Sometimes, as you might have noticed there are some letters varieting from brand to brand, usually the first number is to Identify the shape of the bur, in Medicaline there is a KR next to the number, this means a bur with a rounded tip. For instance 835KR and 835 have the same specifics with the only difference of having a rounded tip or flat tip for each case.
