Dentistry Innovation: Learn more about the CAD/CAM system

15/05/2019 - 18:57

Dentistry is not at a standstill in time: it has been seeking in all ways to know the new techniques and use them to improve the treatment of the patient and bring better solutions for a better cost to the doctor and the user.

One of the most avant-garde and innovative techniques of recent times mixes technology, design and dentistry. In order to facilitate and improve the work of dentists, techniques that seek to automate processes have been gaining space in the office of a dentist. The CAD/CAM technology is not behind and is already becoming part of the daily life of doctors and patients.

What do the acronyms mean and what is technology all about?

CAD/CAM are English abbreviations for the following expressions:

  • CAD: computer-aided design or Computer Aided Design
  • CAM: computer-aided manufacturing or computer-aided manufacturing.

The techniques consist of a process automation by 2D and 3D modeling. It can be used by means of certain software on various types of monitors. However, if your clinic depends significantly on design and modeling through this or other technologies, it is interesting to look for a 3D animation-focused monitor that includes the CAD/CAM mode.

CAD/CAM in dental offices?

The technology is based on a scanner that obtains an extremely accurate image of the patient's mouth. Thus, the dentist can avoid some discomfort for the patient with the taking of molds that end up extending the process, sometimes unnecessarily.

Dental CAD/CAM then, is a replica created virtually in 3 dimensions that makes it possible to perform a more precise and agile work than with traditional methods, usually made with the making of molds through silicones and artisan manufacture of them. After the virtual images of the patient's mouth have been made, the prosthetist has in hand a digital file of the patient's mouth and, from it and the software program, he projects the 3D piece.

After this, the step by step in clinic would be:

  • Laser scanning of the dental piece
  • Design of the restoration using software
  • Construction of the workpiece by robotic milling

Why is this technology used?

The CAD/CAM technology currently has a very high consumption in dentistry, although its beginning has been outside this field. It is an extremely effective system for the manufacture of crowns and fixed prostheses, since it is equipped with new technologies that automate the work of the dentist.

The benefits of its use are, others, the following:

  • Increased aesthetic beauty and creation of more natural-looking parts
  • Increased efficiency in the production of dental pieces: greater speed and precision
  • They make it possible to attend to a single consultation
  • Creation of stronger parts
  • Reduction of discomfort caused to the patient in several molding sessions

This restoration process differs from the conventional process mainly because it can make and apply the prosthesis on the same day. In other cases, without the use of technology, temporary prostheses are used for one or more weeks while the laboratory produces the final restoration.

How can we help you implement this technology?

These restorations do not use metal and up to 6 contiguous pieces can be made. Here at Dentaltix, we offer a wide range of ceramics and nano-resin ceramic materials for this technology.

Some of our best-selling products help dentists make the best prosthetics safely and cheaply:

  1. IPS Empress CAD CEREC / INLAB - LT A1 C14 - (5 pcs.)

The IPS Empress CAD ceramic glass system is reinforced with leucite, combining modern CAD / CAM processing technology with high-performance ceramic materials. This system is an excellent choice for highly esthetic monochromatic single unit restorations (veneers, inlays, onlays, anterior and posterior crowns).
