The importance of dental adhesives in the world of orthodontics

23/03/2021 - 13:04

In odontology there are many essential materials, which include dental adhesives.

Dental adhesives are substances that allow the restoration of one or more dental pieces by joining the tooth surface and the restorative material, essentially, the aim is that the tooth and the material work as a single unit in a safe way, and therefore, at the same time preventing detachment.

There are a multitude of dental adhesives, including restoration adhesives, which are the most widely available on the market, and laboratory adhesives, the latter of which can be used for bonding porcelain or other prosthetic materials.

In this post, we will focus on a third type: orthodontic adhesives. We will tell you all about their most relevant characteristics and show you some of the best rated orthodontic adhesives on our website. You must check it out!

Essential requirements for dental adhesives

First of all, it is important that you take into account the principal requirements that dental adhesives must meet:

  • Low surface tension.
  • Low viscosity.
  • Dimensional stability.
  • Adequate mechanical properties: to withstand chewing forces.
  • Hydroresistance.
  • Biological compatibility.

When choosing an adhesive, you need to consider the method of application and master the technique.

Adhesives for orthodontics

The main function of orthodontic adhesives is the bond between the adhesive, the bracket and the tooth enamel. This bond provides a firm hold, as it must withstand the conditions that occur in the mouths moist oral environment.

In addition, the strength of these adhesives must allow the bracket to come off without causing damage to the enamel and without leaving residue.

Features of orthodontic adhesives

  • These types of adhesives are composed of resin.
  • Their properties are based on softness and stickiness, aspects of an ideal adhesive.
  • Provides easy handling.
  • Incorporates minimal water absorption and reduced film thickness to respect the system prescription.
  • They avoid microfiltration, so that the risk of developing lesions under the bracket is reduced, preventing premature detachment of the appliance.
  • Perfect aesthetics, thanks to their invisible composition.
  • They are not soluble.
  • Resistant to detachment, which facilitates the support of orthodontic biomechanics.

Mode of application of orthodontic adhesives

The conventional process of bonding brackets to the tooth surface requires three agents: enamel conditioner, adhesive and resin. The material most commonly used as an enamel conditioner is phosphoric acid.

On the other hand, self-etching systems have also emerged, which combine acid and adhesive, thus simplifying the bonding procedure.

Types of orthodontic adhesive bonding

Bonding must be a definitive process, that is to say, it must end without leaving any type of sequelae that could cause inconveniences in the treatment. For this reason, it is important that you know the two types of bonding that can be performed:

  • Mechanical bonding: is achieved by the penetration of the luting material into the surface roughness.
  • Chemical bonding: corresponds to the bonding between the base and the adhesive. It can take the form of ionic or covalent bonds.
