Halloween: How to enjoy sweets without neglecting oral health

24/10/2023 - 14:30

Trick or treat? Halloween is, in recent years, a widespread festival in Europe and one of the occasions in which many, many sweets are eaten. It is a festivity in which children want to get as many sweets as possible with the famous trick or treat? Yummy! And since we want everything to be enjoyable, in this article we will tell you about some advice that you can give your patients to live these holidays taking maximum care of their oral health.

How to keep your mouth healthy over Halloween

How to keep your mouth healthy on Halloween

On Halloween it is important to take care of your oral health to avoid problems such as dental cavities and a good way to do it is by limiting the amount of sweets and chocolates consumed during this dark celebration. It is advisable to choose sweets that are easy to chew and to prefer milk chocolates instead of dark chocolate, since the first type is less harmful to the teeth. In addition, it is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day with toothpaste that contains fluoride and use floss to remove food debris that may get stuck between your teeth. It is important to remind our patients that in order to achieve a more efficient and complete cleaning, the use of floss or dental floss is essential.

Candy that is sticky or sticks more easily to teeth is often worse for dental health, as it can stick longer and increase the risk of cavities. Some examples of sticky candy that can be harmful to teeth are sugary gum, caramels, and jelly beans.

Sweets that are highly sour can also be detrimental to dental health, as they can wear away tooth enamel and increase the risk of cavities. Some examples of sour sweets are dried fruit, soft drinks, and energy drinks.

The sugar-free sweets do not contain simple sugars, which are the main causes of dental cavities. However, it is important to note that while sugar-free sweets may be less harmful to teeth than sugar-containing sweets, they can still cause cavities if eaten frequently and one does not maintain good oral hygiene. Sugar-free candy may contain artificial sweeteners, which are sometimes used as sugar substitutes.

It's not necessary to give up the good stuff! Just take a few precautions. In short:

  • Choose sweets that aren't too hard or don't chew them.
  • Choose sweets that are not so sticky.
  • Choose not-so-sour sweets.
  • For those who can't eat sugar, sugar-free sweets are fine, but you need to be careful with them because they can also cause cavities.
  • Who doesn't like chocolate? We do. Milk chocolate is less harmful to teeth.
  • Brushing our teeth at least twice a day is necessary.
  • Go to an appointment with the dentist.

After today's post, we can now sharpen our "Halloween fangs" to eat candy, while taking care of our teeth so that they stay with us for the rest of our lives in the best possible condition. Remember that at Dentaltix we have everything you need for proper oral hygiene:
