The Papacárie DUO, is a gel composed mainly of Papain. Papain is an enzyme similar to human pepsin extracted from the skin of the papaya, which has bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, Papacárie DUO also contains Chloramine, a compound of chlorine and ammonium with bactericidal and disinfectant properties; as well as Toluidine Blue, a photo-sensitiser that enhances the antimicrobial action of the other components. The gel also contains propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol.
The main compound, Papain, acts by breaking down collagen molecules partially degraded by the action of caries, as it has the capacity to digest dead cells. Chloramine chemically softens carious dentine, thus facilitating the elimination of carious tissue. Finally, Toluidine Blue helps to prevent and control caries.
