Differences between Hydrogen Peroxide and Carbamide Peroxide Whitening

10/06/2019 - 13:56

Hydrogen Peroxide is a chemical compound containing hydrogen and oxygen that has a potent oxidizing and reducing effect. In general, it is used for the manufacture of other chemicals and for bleaching paper and textiles. However, it is also used in the world of cosmetics mainly for tooth whiteners and hair products.

On the other hand, Carbamide Peroxide is a chemical composed of Hydrogen Peroxide and Urea. Specifically, the concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide constitutes one-third of the peroxide concentration.

Main differences

Decomposition

Hydrogen peroxide decomposes much faster than carbamide peroxide, as the latter's urea makes the mixture stabilize and increases the duration of its effectiveness. Therefore, carbamide peroxide products release half of their peroxide during the first two hours, while the other 50% will gradually be expelled over the next few hours.

On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide releases most of its peroxide in the first 30-60 minutes, meaning products made from it are used more rapidly. This implies that nighttime whitening kits are made from carbamide peroxide, while daytime and clinical whitening kits are composed of hydrogen peroxide.

Shelf life

In general, products composed of carbamide peroxide have a slightly longer shelf life than those composed of hydrogen peroxide. However, it can be maintained for its entire useful life when refrigerated.

Sensitivity

Althought there is no noticeable difference in sensitivity between the two, when dealing with a patient who is sensitive it is best to use low concentrations of carbamide peroxide. We can avoid causing the patient pain by using products such as Serum Prevdent Sponge Remineralizers (nHAp). As a result we can use any whitening regardless of its composition..

Results

Although both achieve the same end result clinical treatments composed of Hydrogen Peroxide achieve better results in the beginning and Carbamide treatments are more suitable for maintaining whiteness.
