Dental Aspiration Systems: Everything you need to know before you equip your clinic

14/12/2018 - 12:33

Dental aspiration systems were invented in 1961, by a German manufacturer company. They developed the first aspiration system that allowed the treatment of patients in horizontal position. This invention changed  the dentist's way of working, making the working place much more ergonomic.

In addition, the Dental Aspiration Systems have another fundamental function in dental practice: to reduce the risk of cross-contamination of the patient and dentist. Modern rotary instruments spray pressurized water to cool the treatment area, creating a cloud of water particles. Only a vacuum system of the right power can reduce the cloud of water particles to less than the professional's working distance.

For these two reasons, dental aspiration systems are now an essential element in any dental practice.

There are two types of Dental Aspiration Systems, depending on whether the air/liquid separation  each dental unit or on the suction motor itself. It is important to be familiar with both systems, as the choice of one or the other will affect important elements of the clinic design, such as drains, pipes, heights, etc.

Dry suction systems

The dry suction system takes its name from the fact that air-liquid separation is carried out in dental equipment by means of a centrifugal or decantation separator. In this way, all the liquid is sent to a drain that must be located under each of the clinic's dental units.

When separating the liquid in each of the equipment, we need one separator and one drain per equipment, but we do not need a drain in the clinic's engine because only dry air reaches the suction system.

Benefits of the dry vacuum system

  • Provides good performance: (300 l/min per cannula at 160-200 mbar vacuum pressure)
  • The suction motor is simpler and more economical.
  • It is not necessary to drain in the engine
  • The suction motor can be located at a higher level than the dental equipment.

Disadvantages of the dry vacuum system:

  • More maintenance is required than for water suction systems.
  • More devices are needed, as a chair separator is needed.
  • One must have a drain for dental equipment.
  • It is more sensitive to the generated foam and suction can even be interrupted for safety reasons.

Water suction systems

In the water suction system, no air-liquid separator is placed in the equipment, and liquids and air are fed to the suction system.

In this system, the suction motor runs dry, but the same device is equipped with an air-water separator. This is more efficient than the one usually used in dental equipment, which ensures that no liquid reaches the motor. Liquids are directed to a drain to be placed in the engine.

Advantages of the liquid suction system:

  • Provides good performance: (300 l/min per cannula at 160-200 mbar vacuum pressure)
  • The most modern system, it is preferred by most newly opened clinics.
  • It is not necessary to have a separator for dental equipment.
  • Maintenance is easier and is only centralized in the vacuum system.

Disadvantages of the liquid suction system:

  • The suction motor must be at or below the same level as the dental equipment.
  • One would need to  drain in the engine

Amalgam separator

From 1 January 2019, a European regulation will enter into force requiring all dental clinics to separate amalgams by dental aspiration.

There are suction systems that already have integrated amalgam separators and amalgam separators that can be adapted to any dental equipment.

Maintenance of the dental aspiration system

Proper maintenance of the dental suction system prevents unpleasant odours and reduces the risk of clogging and system malfunction.

For a good maintenance of the suction system, we must clean the system every day with disinfectants dental suction disinfectant like Cattani's Pulijet .

Below is a short video on how you can disinfect your suction system with Orotol and Orocup Dürr.
