Clinical practice guide for the prevention and non-invasive treatment of dental caries

First of all, it is important to know how which preventions you must have as a professional in the dental clinic, to take care and recommend your patients the different treatments providing them with security and thus, getting their loyalty.

How to differentiate high and low risk patients?

The current philosophy of caries prevention and control suggests that all patients should be given recommendations, not only those considered to be at high risk.

There are several methods to measure the risk of caries:

  • Cariogram: computer program (downloadable and free) that evaluates several factors such as diet, individual susceptibility, bacterial biofilm or circumstance-habits. These factors are introduced in the program to know the risk of developing or preventing caries.

projects a circular graphic of sectors, with which it is interpreted that, the bigger the green sector, the bigger the possibility of avoiding new injuries and the lower the risk.

It is available in English and Spanish.

  • Caries Risk Semaphore: free online questionnaire, which requires the analysis of fifteen parameters, obtained from the clinical and radiological examination, to evaluate the risk of caries.

This program has a classification of three risk levels (high, medium or low), represented as a traffic light (green, yellow and red). Once the analysis of the different factors has been performed, it provides recommendations based on the results.
