High pH>12.6 has a bacteriostatic effect, protecting against reinfection.

Promotes the formation of tertiary (bridging) dentine.

It has a desensitising effect by sealing the dentinal tubules.

Used for:

Care of caries-free dentine near the pulp

Treatment of deep caries or indirect capping

Direct pulp capping

Vital amputation

For temporary insertion of root canals

Forms a barrier to cement to prevent exposure to acidic media.
